Apr 25, 2025 Building Dreams: Eagle Eye Construction
Vennicia Kingston was not just another face in the bustling Rhode Island construction industry. As a proud member of Local 271 Laborers’, she gained insights into the world of commercial construction, earning a respectable living while dreaming of something more—a vision that would ultimately lead to the creation of her own company, Eagle Eye Construction.
“Seeing the gaps in the union construction industry inspired me to take action,” Vennicia recalls, reflecting on the early days of her entrepreneurial journey. “I wanted to provide individuals in my community access to livable wages, healthcare, and retirement packages. These opportunities changed my life, and I wanted to share that advantage with others.”
However, the path to entrepreneurship was no easy feat. In the first years of establishing Eagle Eye Construction, Vennicia faced both excitement and trepidation. Each day presented learning opportunities about not just her business, but also about her potential. “I still feel as if I’m in the early days,” she admits. Despite the passage of eight years, the journey continues to be one of growth and discovery.
Enter RIBBA. In those critical early days, RIBBA served as a lifeline, providing essential resources that a fledgling business like Eagle Eye Construction desperately needed. “They helped me realize that my dream was achievable through hard work and faith,” she emphasizes. The support came in various forms: funding, mentoring, and essential business services that are often elusive for small businesses. “Access to banking relationships was challenging; RIBBA bridged that gap for me.”
A pivotal moment in her journey was securing her first union contract with Gilbane after three years of strategic networking. This achievement marked not just a milestone but a turning point, validating her vision. “I now have contracts with Gilbane, Dimeo, and Shawmut, which were my target goals. It’s a proud moment for me and my team, one that fills me with immense excitement for the future.”
Yet, there were challenges along the way, particularly around capital and fiscal structure. “Most people learn the hard way about running a business, and I am no exception. However, RIBBA made the process less painful with access to community resources.” Vennicia found support through RIBBA’s loan and grant programs, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic when her new business was ineligible for other relief measures. The organization’s back-office support, including help with QuickBooks, tax filings, and counseling, was invaluable.
A strong advocate for RIBBA, Vennicia frequently shares her story with aspiring entrepreneurs in her community. “I refer them to RIBBA all the time, urging them to take advantage of the resources available. I want them to experience the same support that I did.”
As Eagle Eye Construction enters a new phase of growth, Vennicia is focused on delegating daily tasks that currently consume 30 hours of her week. “I’m looking to hire office staff and expand my office space,” she reveals. Plans for non-profit work also loom on the horizon, with Vennicia eager to use RIBBA’s facility for workshops aimed at helping others in her industry.
The journey of Eagle Eye Construction is a testament to the resilience of small business owners and the transformative impact of supportive community resources like RIBBA. Through dedication, strategic partnerships, and an unwavering commitment to her community, Vennicia Kingston is not just building a construction company; she is building a legacy—one that empowers others to pursue their dreams and creates lasting change within the workforce.
